PAVILLON DE CHAVANNES

A FAMILY ADVENTURE SINCE 1861

Generation after generation,   the know-how and love of the Beaujolais land is passed on in the place called Chavannes.

Instilled by Léontine Chanrion in 1861, the great-grandmother of Laure Jambon-Mareau, current winemaker of the Domaine de Pavillon de Chavannes, the passion for viticulture has never faded within the family.

Today it is the turn of the 5th generation to express themselves on this magnificent granitic soil and its steep slopes characteristic of the Côte de Brouilly.

LABEL WITH A HISTORICAL REFLECTION

To understand the similarities between the historical label of the Domaine and Château Thivin, we must go back to the 1930s of the last century.

At that time, Léontine Chanrion had three daughters: Yvonne, Denise and Marcelle.

If Marcelle leaves the region, Yvonne and Denise stay on Mont Brouilly and meet two young men:

Claude Geoffray (Château Thivin) for Yvonne and André Jambon for Denise.

Yvonne leaves to work at Château Thivin with her husband while Denise takes over the Pavillon de Chavannes with André Jambon.

Despite everything, the family understanding remains intact and the two estates even work hand in hand to pool forces, in the vineyard as in the business, with the creation of a common label where just the name of the estate changed: a label straw yellow and brown accompanied by gothic typographies very characteristic of this period.

Unfortunately, Yvonne died prematurely and saw the two estates separate in the management of their activities.

However, as a reflection of the history and know-how of the two sisters, the two estates continued to use the same label until 2020.

A family heritage

The renewal of the domain

Laure Jambon-Mareau, 5th generation of the family, takes over the reins of the Pavillon de Chavannes in 2020.

From then on, she wanted to leave her mark and modernize the historic label for the French market.

The goal isn't to ignore its history but to show that the Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes evolves with the times and wants to be in line with the values of the Domaine currently.

A land of great wealth

Historic place of the estate, Chavannes has the particularity of being one of the rare terroirs rich in pink granite, more or less eroded, on the Côte de Brouilly.

Unlike the traditional granitic terroirs of Beaujolais, that of the place called Chavannes is distinguished by low water stress during high temperatures.

Our plots of vines thus show remarkable resistance in vintages such as 2020 or 2022.

Facing west, the place called Chavannes benefits from sunshine at the sunset, on medium slopes, which give supple fruity wines.

Although the place called Les Berthaudières is close to the place called Chavannes, our plots of vines are all very different.

On hillsides with steep and medium slopes, the terroir here is very schistose thanks to the strong presence of volcanic rocks (Pierres bleues de Brouilly). The soil is deeper and thus allows to have a low water stress limiting the damage during high temperatures. Its full northern exposure also helps in this regard.

This therefore allows us, even in sunny vintages, to always have a good quality of grapes, with its spicy and black fruit notes characteristic of this locality.
